VelAir is an inflatable bicycle mudguard that explores air as both a structural and functional material.

Inflated through a standard bicycle valve, the object uses air pressure to transform a flat textile pattern into a stable three-dimensional form. When deflated, it folds to a minimal pack size; when inflated, it protects both rider and bicycle from dirt and splashes while also providing a cushioned seat during breaks.

By replacing rigid components with a welded textile structure, VelAir investigates how inflatable systems can rethink everyday bicycle accessories. The project combines protection, portability and multifunctionality while challenging conventional ideas of what a mudguard can be.

Constructed from TPU-coated nylon fabric and fabricated through high-frequency welding, VelAir reflects on the potential of air-filled structures beyond their established applications in outdoor equipment and architecture. The project embraces the fascination of watching a flat sheet of fabric expand into a functional object, proposing a lightweight and adaptable alternative to traditional bicycle accessories.

VelAir was awarded the Talente München Prize 2026.
